Preparing For Mass Computer Removal

If your business has an entire department of computers that need to be replaced or remove, basic trash and recycling systems may not be able to handle the workload. You'll need to get in contact with a roll off dumpster service or schedule a pickup with a disposal service like Pequannock Disposal Service to plan such a removal, but there are a few other profitable precautions that should be taken. Before throwing everything out, consider a few computer inspection and parts removal points that can keep your business stocked with spare parts while still getting rid of the garbage efficiently.

What Computer Parts Can Be Removed?

A lot of components inside computers can be removed and placed inside another computer. Just because you're moving onto the newest, best computer models on the market doesn't mean you won't have to deal with damaged or corrupted devices later. The following parts should be checked for quality before throwing everything away:

  • Hard drives. The hard drive stores the bulk of a computer's information, including the operating system that allows you to easily click and type on the computer and all of the files that employees store on the computer. Parallel ATA (PATA) and Serial ATA (SATA) are the two main connector types, and there are adapters that can allow one to connect with the other. You can use old hard drives for extra storage or keep old information in bulk storage by keeping the hard drive.
  • Processor. The processor is considered the brains of the computer because it calculates all of the actions and input into something that you can use. When you move your mouse, the processor translates a mouse signal into movement on the screen. Just being on and idle requires constant calculation in the background. Processors can be expensive, so if you have a skilled Information Technology (IT) staff, it may be worth your time and money to carefully remove the processors.
  • Memory acts between the hard drive and processor as a faster way to get information. Some files need to be used repeatedly, which can happen thousands of times per second. Instead of search across the entire hard drive and taking minutes to find the same information, memory stores the most common files for faster retrieval. Memory generations can be identified by the physical notches on the modules (also called memory sticks), which prevents mismatch.

Preparing For Bulk Removal

Once you've had time to identify the parts that you want to remove, you can make recycling and transportation much easier. The case and power supply are the heaviest parts of the computer and can be removed to make the carrying load lighter.

The two components also have different recycling potential. Even if you have computer cases with lots of plastic, there is often aluminum framework underneath that can be sent to scrap metal recycling. The power supply has aluminum as well as copper wiring on the inside that can be quite valuable at a recycling center.

Get in contact with a roll off dumpster service to make storage of your recycled parts easier. The different scrap parts can be separated into different component types, which can be loaded into roll off trucks if the components are destined for different recycling processes. Don't let the complex process of recycling tie up your business process; contact a recycling professional to plan the removal for you.
